You've seen the city now see the wildlife Welcome to my place
Most foreigners see Africa as one huge nature reserve with people living amongst the animals. NOT TRUE. Unfortunately we have nature reserves amongst the cities and towns and not the other way around. These are some of the things you're likely to see if you take a walk in the South African wilderness (which is NOT adviced) That is the attitude most babbons take to humans touring game reserves. They have no regard whether you're a buffalo or a woman, you're both treated in a nonchalant way by baboons. The wilderness is their home and boy do they treat it like it's home. They are also very intelligent animals and have been seen breaking into cars and rooms.

Just like mommy Just chilling
Lioness are given the role of babysitter and feeder. They are the ones who hunt, believe it or not, most people believe that it is the males who do the hunting when it's really lioness doing the dirty job. Males do hunt too, of cause, though not as regularly as females. Leopards are predatory animals but unlike the lion, a leopard is small in size and it's food is sometimes stolen by other predators and scavengers. To counter this leopards climb trees, with their catch, and eat their food whilst in the tree. They also rest up there too, like the guy on the left. The view also gives them advantage in that they can see prey from far off.

Giraffe crossing Baby killers
Another contradiction. Nature and man. This road is in a game reserve. Baboons have, unfortunately, learned that roads mean food. Tourists can't resist feeding the baboons and they line, literally, the side of the road waiting for food from passing buses and cars. They even beg. Thank God that Giraffes are too caught up in their world to care about us humans. Baby crocodiles. Crocodiles are actually a part of South Africa's defence force, believe it or not. The border between South Africa and neighbouring countries Namibia and Botswana is the Orange River which is filled with crocodiles. Many people have tried swimming across to get to SA but only to add to the crocodiles menu.

When I grow up... Yes, in Africa too.
Cheetah cubs waiting for their mother to return from hunting. Cheetahs are the fastest running land animals in the world. A cheetah was recently put up against the fastest man in the world, Maurice Green, and ran the 100 metres in less than 6 seconds. They need to catch their prey quickly though because they use a lot of energy gathering up speed. Which means that if prey does get away the cheetah would have to wait hours before another hunt. We're not only about land animals in Africa. You name them, we probably have them. Dolphins on the left but we're better known for our sharks, most shark research is done in South African waters.

In African tradition, elephants are thought of as thinkers, probably because of their graceful walk. They take their time in everything but be warned they are one of the fastest animals too, they will attack if threatened and trust me, they make sure that they kill. Many tourist cars have been literally flattened because tourists have come too close. Mother elephants are very possessive when it comes to their young and anyone coming too close will be stood on! They've been known to catch retreating cars. These are a few of my favorite photographs from my different travels. Feel free to browse them as you like.
